NASCAR’s All-Star event was exciting
Did everyone enjoy the NASCAR All-Star Challenge as much as I did? I thought it did exactly as it was supposed to do, entertain the fans.
It started off with the Nextel Open which was a short 30 lap race to determine the last three drivers to make the the All-Star Challenge. Remember that this race is full of the bottom feeders in NASCAR’s senior circuit and they would be willing to do anything to get a chance for one million dollars.
It was actually a very good race with only a few minor conflicts and some surprising results. After Carl Edwards led most of the race, his car just slid back as Marting Truex Jr and Johnny Sauter took him over at the same time and finished one two to advance to the All-Star event. Kenny Wallace was the highest vote getter on the lead lap and he was the third and final one to advance to the next race.
The All-Star race was exciting at the end as Kevin Harvick held off Jimmy Johnson for the win and the million dollar plus payout. That makes his second million dollar win this year. Younger brother Kyle Busch ever so slightly took out him and his brother Kurt and ended the race for both as he was being over aggressive an impatient. I am sure Kurt let him have it at home even though he was pretty level headed about the whole thing in after race interviews.
While some say the format stunk (Jimmy Spenser), I have to disagree. The one thing that probably held back some drivers were the tires. This fact has been pointed out to NASCAR, but they yet have let Goodyear tires come in with a tire that will grip better for the drivers. Right now the tires are so hard the cars are virtually skipping on the track instead of gripping to the track. It was quite evident a couple of times as cars just drifted sideways instead of turning in the curves. NASCAR needs to make improvements before next weeks 600 mile race or the attrition rate may be very high.
Till the next Pit Stop…..
